Despite the strict limit of only two per caller, commemorative plates of Richmond Mayor-elect Dwight Jones aren’t selling as heavily as planned, the Virginia Historical Society Mint said this morning.
“We really thought these things would go like hotcakes,” historical society mint president and CEO Paul A. Levengood said of the 8 and 1/2-inch in diameter plates with 22-karat gold trim. Since Jones’ Nov. 4 victory, the mint has sold only 13 of the limited-edition dishes, and has nearly 300,000 more in stock.
Crafted in magnificent fine porcelain and featuring a likeness of the mayor-elect above the phrase “Richmond Is Super!,” the collectible platter is available exclusively from the Virginia Historical Society Mint in this one-time-only offer, Levengood explained.
“Considering that Dwight Jones is this city’s fifth or sixth black mayor to ever be elected, this was a moderately historic election,” he said of the $19.95 plate, which can be purchased with cash and major credit cards, however, the mint has apologized for not accepting COD’s. “Citizens should want a keepsake that they can hang on their walls, put onto their mantles, or even use as fine china.”
If Dwight Jones collectible plate sales don’t pick up soon, Levengood said, the historical society mint would fall to its back up plan of selling Dwight Jones commemorative coins for $49.95 plus $5.99 shipping and handling, each with actual redeemable value of $1.59 in Liberia.
