Roughly 210,000 homes in the Richmond area have been left without access to an essential Thanksgiving Day food item after freezing cold temperatures caused a 12-inch underground stuffing pipe to break this morning, public utilities officials said.
The pipe, a main artery that carries the breaded turkey dressing directly into homes throughout the region, burst around 2 a.m. near Grace and Stafford streets, said Department of Public Utilities Director Chris Beschler. The explosion could be heard from miles away and sent nearly 13 tons of the poultry-cavity filling food - generally made with vegetables and herbs – hundreds of feet in the air, and backed up the morning rush hour for miles.
Utility crews are not expected to replace the broken pipe before Thursday, but plan to distrubute thousands of boxes of Stove Top to needy families before the holiday.
