Sources today told Tobacco Avenue that “there is a strong, if not very strong chance” that independent weekly newspaper the Richmond Free Press will endorse Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as early as tomorrow.

While the Free Press editor would neither confirm nor deny reports that the nation’s first African-American nominee was set to be endorsed on the paper’s front page, editorial section and possibly several inside pages, the sources – speaking on the condition of anonymity – said there is “good reason to believe” that Obama could land the backing from the publication.

“What we’re hearing in the local media industry is that the Free Press has values and a mission that really align perfectly with Obama and his own vision for the country,” the source said.  “Consumers shoul

d not be surprised if, in the coming weeks, they see more pictures of Obama on the front of the Free Press, or adjectives such as ‘phenomenal,’ ’inspiring,’ and even ‘courageous’ printed before the candidate’s name, or used to describe one of his speeches, quotes, or actions.”

Sources explained that the endorsement may very well be followed up with heavy praise of the Illinois senator, as well as his wife, his car or general life story.  Headlines in the Free Press during the next few weeks may be largely Obama-related, the source said, with letters as high as a 52-point font that could, conceivably, include declarations such as “Yes He Can,” “History Made,” or, put more simply, “Lovin’ It.”
