Richmond School Board member John Emmanuel Jr. expressed dismay today over being forced by the group’s chairman to read “
the ultra boring” Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, one of seven stupid assigned summer reading books for the city’s educational governing body.
“I don’t understand why Mr. [board Chairman George] Braxton makes us read this stuff, it’s just so lame and dumb,” Emmanuel said of the 1977 Newbery Medal-award winning children’s novel. “I mean, I get that the topic – on this book in particular – is serious and all, but, like, I just want to go out and play with my friends and stuff.”
Emmanuel further explained that he was growing nervous over whether he could even finish all of the crappy assigned reading before the fall semester, because he saw on board member Carol A.O. Wolf’s Facebook wall that boardmate Lisa Dawson has “already breezed though” Where the Red Fern Grows, The Phantom Tollbooth and Maniac Magee.
