A Richmond-area bug crossed the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K finish line yesterday morning, completing the April 5 road race in near record bug time.
“This has always been a great course for me,” said eight-footed bug Earl Harper, who noted that turning the corner at Chantilly Street took a near-full afternoon during his seven-and-a-half week run. “I will say, though, that it is pretty irritating they don’t keep the roads closed for us to finish.”
Harper explained that he felt good during most of the 6.2-mile race, but said he “started to lose it” around the fifth mile at the Lee statue, when four of his ankles began to hurt.
While the human winner of the 10K finished in less than 29 minutes, the overall winner was 435-foot-tall giant Roger Wilhelm, a Kansas City, Kan. resident whose two-step race was completed in slightly less than a second.
