A possible renovation of the historic Hippodrome Theater in Jackson Ward has at least one local official excited about the prospect of having a new blues club in town, and chuckling at what he calls a “kinda wacky” name.
“Having a place for nightly jazz and entertainment to revitalize this part of town again would be a blessing for everyone,” said City Councilman President William J. Pantele, whose 2nd District includes part of the historically African-American neighborhood, “but it is too bad the Hippodrome isn’t also a palindrome, because then we could spell it the same forwards and backwards.”
“Like ‘Otto’ or ‘Hannah,’” he added, explaining that the Hippodrome has no relation to the herbivorous semi-aquatic African mammal of a similar name.
Pantele noted the if the $5 million renovation project is completed, the “Hungry, Hungry Hippo Dome” would rest just four blocks away from the historic and humorous-looking Old Timey Bottles of Milk building just down the street.
