Gov. Timothy M. Kaine unveiled his own YouTube channel yesterday, saying he will utilize the video-sharing Web site to keep citizens informed of Virginia government actions and perform that “wicked cool trick with Diet Coke and Mentos” for online audiences around the world.
In a statement, Kaine called the use of new media “vital” to engaging c
itizens in the process of government and keeping them laughing or otherwise interested in two-to-three minute Internet videos.
“I plan to update the site frequently, not just with clips of public-service announcements and my speeches,” the governor said, “but with anything I’d normally e-mail to friends, like this really neat thing my son showed me where this guy jumps off a cliff in one of those flying wing-suits – not necessarily hilarious, but great to share nonetheless.”
Should the YouTube channel become a success, Kaine said during a press conference in Second Life, he would consider more frequently updating his Facebook page and Wikipedia entry with the Twitter micro-blogging software from off his iPhone.
