CarMax Inc. said today that it was awarded the Better Business Bureau’s International Torch Award for Marketplace Excellence, though the Goochland County-based used car retailer only accepted the honor after a thorough 125-point inspection of the bronzed trophy.

The accolade recognizes companies that have “fair, honest and ethical business practices,” though CarMax made sure the trophy’s bowl, engraving, stand, support system, handle, casing, metallic coating, anti-lock brake system, base, screw, placard, airbags and wooden frame were all in working order before giving an acceptance speech.

“Only after this quality inspection can we say that we are honored to have won this certified prestigious award,” CarMax president and CEO Tom Folliard said in a statement. 

“This is the way award-getting should be,” he added.
