In a journalistic feat considered both extraordinary and inexplicable, Style Weekly today published an 89-page cover story that ran 15 pages longer than the newspaper itself.
While the 26-year-old alternative weekly frequently comes close to doing so, the 105,140-word article – titled “Richmond: A Typed and Photoed History” – represents the first time Style has managed to run a cover story for the entire length of the paper and, impossibly, several pages more.
“After nearly three decades of trying to stretch the limits of what is literarily achievable, I’m proud to say our team of wordsmiths has achieved it,” Style editor Jason Roop said. “Incredible? Yes. Inconceivable? You bet. Unfathomable? Better start fathoming.”
The article was being picked up off news bins across the city this morning as befuddled consumers expressed confusion over where the extra 15 pages originated, since readers had, in fact, already reached the last page of the tabloid-style paper.
“After reading the restaurant reviews I usually skip to ‘The Back Page’ to see what the opinion of the week is, but after I finished, all the sudden, the paper just kept going,” said Seth Stansfield as he sipped a coffee at Starbucks in the Fan. “I think Energizer Bunny jokes are fairly retarded, but this seems like the perfect place for one.”
The lengthy article was the second major coup for the alt-weekly since last Wednesday, when it managed to drive its “city zeitgeist” ranking to the mathematic constant of plus-Pi. Roop said Style is still unsure of last week’s score, but has managed to work 3.14159 out to the 126th decimal point.
