LEXINGTON - Students at Washington and Lee University today selected Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton as the Democratic presidential nominee in a mock convention that failed to give an accurate portrayal of how the real nomination will pan out.

“This was a superb exercise in democracy, giving students wonderful insight into our great nation’s political process,” Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said of the unsuccessful mock convention in which roughly 1,600 undergraduates took part.  “Unfortunately, the end result was not the answer we were looking for.”

Clinton beat out contender and fellow senator Barack Obama in the event that was unable to live up to its 100-year history of providing accurate predictions of presidential candidates.  While the correct answer in the exercise was Obama, analysts said it would have ultimately been impossible for W&L to correctly choose the next U.S. president given the two choices.

“The kids’ hearts were in the right place,” W&L political science professor Vince Miller said, “but unfortunately, voting for the right candidate takes head smarts, which as we can see was clearly lacking today in Virginia.”

With all respect, how do you know W&L got it wrong? I pray to God they got it wrong, but until the convention is over there’s no way of knowing that. Considering their track record over the last 23 elections, you owe them the benefit of the doubt to wait and see until you splash “failure” in a huge bold headline.
