Central Virginia McDonald’s restaurants will be testing ground for a new product from the fast-food chain: a sandwich that contains a special barbecue sauce, onions and pickles atop a piece of pork meat in the shape of a cow’s thigh bone.
The $2.29 McFemur, which measures two inches high and three feet long, will be offered starting next week at 11 restaurants in the area prior to an expected nationwide roll out. For an extra $1.50, customers can add french fries and a drink to the sandwich, which contains a pork-based resemblance of the femur much like the one found on a real Bovine – complete with two ball joints on the lower extremity of the intercondylar fossa.
“We have paid extra attention to make sure that the all-new McFemur will be a hit with consumers,” said Randolph Hunt, McDonald’s senior vice president of product development. “Much of this process has been extensive research to ensure that the sandwich is an accurate replica of the bone found where a steer’s hind legs meet its hip joints, smothered in barbecue sauce.”
Sandra Young, a restaurant analyst at Raymond James & Co. in New York, said if the McRib’s history proves true, the McFemur should be a hit among the coveted 18-to-34 year old, 250-plus pound male demographic. “McDonald’s has found this study group to be most appreciative of the various livestock bone-shaped pork meats eaten on a sesame-seed bun,” she said.
Young added that McDonald’s officials are hoping for the sandwich to test more positively than previous experiments, including the pork-heavy McSpleen and Filet-O-Fatback.
